 Fitografía sonora

The project Sonorous Phytography for Ciudad Okinawa is a collection of soundscapes that document different plant species of that city and its surroundings. It is a intimate monument for the communities inhabiting this hybrid-cultural context in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The sketchbook that constitutes the project contains a speaker with a microchip inside its cover and the pages trigger diverse groups of soundscapes when leafed through. The sketchbook is a compendium of regional plant names, distinct sonorous environments of the municipality and its whereabouts, inhabitants’ handwriting styles and voices. Each recording contains a villagers voice within a soundscape. The sound of the surroundings, voice tone, coloquial plant names and the places each one chooses to mention sketch the place and communities of the area.

During the Okinawa Battle in 1945 tens of thousands of Okinawans, Japanese from other prefectures and Americans died in the Mabuni fields, in the south of Okinawa Japan. Months afterwards vegetables there grew exceptionally large due to the abnormal soil richness caused by the remains of the fallen. In the same manner this war caused the arrival and establishment of an Okinawan community in Santa Cruz Bolivia. To me a landscape is the trajectory between a place and another one. The sketchbook seeks to document the hybrid-cultural context that sprouts between Ciudad Okinawa and its nearby municipalities. It also evokes the link between landscape genre, botanical illustration and early past century travelers. Sonorous Phytography for Ciudad Okinawa is an intimate monument for the communities inhabiting this hybrid-cultural context in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
